Here We Gooooooooooo(al)!
An incredibly quick fact during the World Cup.
Howdy! It’s Joey, back with more Fun Fact Friyay. Today’s fact is one of those “blink and you might miss it” accomplishments.
Magnus Arvidsson, a Swedish soccer player, holds the record for fastest hat trick, scoring three goals in just 89 seconds during a match in 1995.
The 2026 World Cup is officially underway! This year’s event is the largest World Cup ever, with a whopping 48 countries participating. It’s also the first time three countries have co-hosted; matches are taking place in 16 cities across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Mexico played its first game on June 11, and both Canada and the United States are taking the pitch for the first time on June 12. Love a lil’ Friday hosting before hitting the town.
The matches so far have been quite entertaining, particularly the second half of Czechia and South Korea, which saw three goals in the span of 21 minutes. That’s pretty good, but it’s nowhere near as quick as Magnus Arvidsson, a Swedish forward.
In 1995, Arvidsson had recently joined IFK Hässleholm, a club in Sweden’s second division. On September 3, 1995, IFK Hässleholm had a match against Landskrona BoIS.
This was a particularly intense matchup, because IFK Hässleholm was facing relegation. That concept may be foreign to fans of other sports, but it’s really something all leagues should adopt, because it’s awesome.
In short, at the end of the season, the worst teams from one league get sent down to the league a level below. Conversely, the best clubs from that lower league get sent up. It’s an excellent way to keep things competitive and adds a nice bit of pressure, particularly towards the end of the season.
If IFK Hässleholm didn’t win this match, it would have dropped down to the third-tier Swedish league. Would Arvidsson let his club lose? As they say in Sweden, “Inga!”
Arvidsson scored three goals in 89 seconds. IFK Hässleholm won 5-3, and the club avoided relegation.
Over 369 appearances throughout his career, Arvidsson scored 102 times. So, that singular match accounted for about 2.94% of all of his goals. Quite the stellar performance!
