Howdy! It’s Joey with more Fun Fact Friyay. It’s National Donut Day, so we’re celebrating accordingly (by eating a lot of donuts, but also with this fact).
The largest donut ever was made in Utica, NY, in 1993 and weighed 3,739 pounds.
There’s a place near-ish me called Round Rock Donuts. They sell a “Texas Sized Donut” that costs $12 and is approximately the size of a human head. I ordered this one time and ate the entire thing, though it was a struggle.
However, despite their best efforts, Round Rock Donuts has quite a ways to go if they want to set a Guinness World Record.
That honor belongs to Hemstrought’s Bakeries, Donato’s Bakery, and WKLL-FM in Utica, New York. On January 21, 1993, the trio got together to make history with a donut bigger than the world had ever seen.
The colossal donut weighed 1.695 tons, or 3,739 pounds, and became the largest filled donut in the record books. Additionally, it was 16 feet in diameter and 16 inches high in the center.
As far as I know, it did not tip over and trap someone underneath, but death by donut does not sound like the worst way to go out.
Lite 98.7, the sister station to WKLL-FM, calculated the caloric intake of such a behemoth. The average jelly donut has 250 calories, so this record-setting pastry contained about 934,750 calories.
Coincidentally, Utica also holds the record for the largest watering can, which weighed 2,000 pounds and was nearly as tall (15.5 feet) as the donut was wide.
If you’re ever at the Utica Zoo, you can spot the watering can in all its glory. That’s the reason people go to zoos—for the hydration.
UMMMM... you had me at 'donut'!! My favorite thing! What an interesting publication!!!
My favorite fun fact from this post is that you live in Texas! Howdy from DFW!
