Howdy! It’s Joey, back with more Fun Fact Friyay. We’re celebrating a birthday, and you know what that means. (If you don’t, I’m talking about cake.)
The longest cake in the world was made for Las Vegas’s 100th birthday and measured 5,300 meters (17,388 feet) long.
My birthday is this weekend. Earlier this week, I was at the grocery store and got lost in the cake section. I found a coupon for 50 cents off any cake from the bakery, and then I peered a little closer.
The coupon excluded tres leches cakes.
Tres leches is my FAVORITE kind of cake, and I don’t like seeing my love being excluded. Step it up for my next birthday, H-E-B!
The bakery was out of tres leches anyway, so I settled for a red velvet option. It was a decent size, though compared to the largest cake ever, it may as well have been a thumbtack (albeit less sharp).
Las Vegas turned 100 years old in 2020. To celebrate its centennial, the city known for modesty and greyscale colors brought in 1,500 bakers from the Bakers Association Kerala of India.
Those bakers crafted a vanilla cake with chocolate ganache that just wouldn’t stop. It measured 5.3 kilometers long, or 17,388 feet, and required 12 tons of sugar and flour.
This cake was made in January 2020 and was hastily consumed within 10 minutes by a ravenous crowd. It was likely one of the largest gatherings before Covid changed the world.
Also, as someone who’s run a 5K somewhat recently, I’m not sure if having a cake along the entire length of the track would be more or less motivating. Either way, I’d certainly choose that over the conditions from the 1904 Olympics marathon.
Here’s a bonus cake fact: The FBI was able to track down Ted Kaczynski, also known as The Unabomber, in part because he used the phrase “you can’t eat your cake and have it too” in a manifesto, which is a slight twist from the standard saying.
Is there anything cakes can’t do? Hope you get to have some this weekend!
I know it's late, but happy birthday!
Lol - cakes ARE all powerful! Happy Birthday!! I hope you were able to use the coupon since you had to settle for red velvet. And I like how you subtly worked in that Olympics link!
